Kalamatianos
Kalamata
Kalamatianos is a popular dance, often referred to as syrtos. Its roots are lost in antiquity: on ancient vases we see dancers caught as in the Kalamatianos dance.
The current name of "Kalamatianos" indicates its modern origin from the Peloponnese (Kalamata: city of the Peloponnese). Thanks to the cheerful music that accompanies it and its pleasant rhythm, it was established throughout Greece with various variations.
From wedding customs, we know that in ancient years, at the wedding the bride would give the close relatives and friends of the groom a silk scarf from Kalamata, as the city was famous for its famous silks, which they would tie around their necks. Such a tie symbolized devotion and friendship.
