Tillirkotissa

Cyprus

By Tillyrkotissa we mean the native inhabitant of Tillyria, which is a mountainous peninsula in the northwest of Cyprus.

There are repeated syllables in this song. In the so-called Korakistica, a coded language that, by inserting other syllables into the words, made an otherwise understandable conversation incomprehensible. Korakistica was used during the Ottoman Empire so that the Turks could understand what the Greeks were saying.

The name Korakistica satirizes Adamantios Korais and the linguistic corrections he imposed on the language, who was trying to "cleanse" Modern Greek from Turkish and foreign elements.

Tellyrkotissa is logically an example of a song that lovers used to sing to each other so that their parents would not understand.
